English for Academic Study (15+)

English for Academic Study

If you need additional English language training before you start your academic course, you may be interested in a High School Pre-Programme course (English for Academic Study).

Two courses are available at high school level in London, Cambridge & Canterbury

I. PRE-PROGRAMME The Pre-Programme is ideal for students planning to study an A-level, International Baccalaureate or University Foundation programme, but who are not yet old enough, or do not have sufficient English Language ability.

Requirements:

  • Age: 15+
  • Academic level: 9 or 10 years of schooling completed with a good school report
  • English Language level: IELTS 4.0

Programme:

  • You will study a wide range of subjects to find out what your strengths and interests are, including science, maths, languages, humanities and the arts.
  • Hours in class: 26-30 hours per week
  • 7-10 subjects studied over 1 – 3 terms, depending on the starting date
  • Flexible, guaranteed progression to A-level, International Baccalaureate or University Foundation on successful completion
  • Includes one-to-one coaching on future study pathways
  • You will undertake College assessments and IELTS examinations. GCSE exams may be taken if required
  • Airport transfers and pick up available

Subject options:

In Cambridge, seven subjects are studied – including 5 compulsory subjects – with GCSE examinations available in up to six subjects if required.

In Canterbury, ten subjects are studied – all of which are compulsory. iGCSEs in Maths and English can be taken if required.

In London, ten subjects are studied – all of which are compulsory. Students starting in September are obliged to take GCSEs or iGCSEs. Students on shorter courses starting later in the year are not usually expected to sit the exams.

II. ACADEMIC ENGLISH PROGRAMME (similar to course I but with additional General English and English for Academic Study).

This programme will prepare you for academic study on any pre-university programme including GCSE, Pre: Programme, A-level, International Baccalaureate or University Foundation.

Requirements:

  • Age: 14+
  • Academic level: whatever is required for the academic programme you wish to follow
  • English Language level: IELTS 3.5

Programme:

  • Course length: 1 – 4 terms
  • Hours in class: 25 hours per week
  • Entry dates: vary according to course length
  • Includes the study of General English and English for Academic Purposes
  • Provides an introduction to the vocabulary required for Business, Maths, Science, Humanities and the Arts.
  • Flexible start dates to fit in with your future academic programme
  • Flexible preparation for all academic programmes
  • Airport transfers and pick up available

*Students will be assessed to determine suitability for their preferred programme and advised accordingly.
